Causes and Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and helps support the arch. A sharp pain near the heel with the first morning steps can be a sign of plantar fasciitis. This painful  condition usually causes a sharp or aching pain near the heel. Pain is frequently strongest with the first steps after getting out of bed or standing after a long rest. It can ease after a few minutes of movement, but return after activity. Some patients also notice stiffness or tenderness along the bottom of the foot.

Repeated strain can place too much stress on the plantar fascia. Risk factors include a sudden increase in exercise, long hours spent standing, and tight calf muscles. Flat feet or high arches can also change how pressure moves through the foot. Other possible causes include excess body weight and shoes that lack proper support. Runners, dancers, and workers who spend time on hard floors can be more likely to develop symptoms. Because several problems can cause similar heel pain, an accurate diagnosis is important before treatment begins.

A podiatrist can examine the foot, review when the pain occurs, and check the patient's range of motion. X-rays or other imaging tests can help rule out a fracture, arthritis, or another cause of heel pain. Treatment by a podiatrist includes custom orthotics, supportive shoe recommendations, and a guided stretching program. This foot doctor may also suggest wearing a night splint or temporary walking boot to reduce strain. Surgery is rarely required, but it can be considered for severe pain that continues despite other care. Early evaluation can help prevent the pain from limiting work, exercise, and everyday movement. It can also support a safer return to activity. If you have symptoms of plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for effective relief and treatment solutions.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.
